Qualitative research methods in veterinary epidemiology

Rebecca Hibbard and Mathilde Paul (Université de Toulouse)

This workshop covers the principles and application of qualitative research methods in veterinary epidemiology. Qualitative research methods are increasingly used in veterinary epidemiology, both independently and as a complement to quantitative research. The workshop will include a mixture of theoretical presentations and practical activities, giving participants the opportunity to draft an example research plan and practice thematic analysis.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the main characteristics of qualitative research and where and how to apply qualitative research methods in veterinary epidemiology.
  • Be aware of the different approaches used in qualitative research, and the implications of these for study design.
  • Understand the different approaches to thematic analysis, and how to decide which approach is most appropriate.
  • Practice performing thematic analysis.
